Mailguards

Mailguards were charged with the safe conveyance of made up bags of mail travelling over, originating on, or sent to stations along their designated stretch of line. They were not authorised to open sealed bags, but were allowed to accept letters handed to them at stations and to clear station letterboxes and cancel them with their own handstamp. Mails for stations along the rest of the route were handed out to the postal official accepting the sealed bags for that station, the other letters being handed in at the end of the trip for sending forward by other means of transport.

Mailguard cancellation A Mailguard cancellation [right] without route number or side number.
